Social Media Madness

social media for the socially awkward

I Want to be Mayor!

And unlike other politicians, I’m going to run my campaign without any campaign funds, without a  super PAC, and without a single TV ad!

The coolest part is that you don’t even have to vote!

My entire campaign strategy consists of checking in on Foursquare. Yup, that’s right, I’m one check-in away from being the Mayor of the VFW! And about a billion check-ins away from being the Mayor of Starbucks.

For those of you on Foursquare, you will note that I am rather late in starting my campaign. Most of my friends already hold multiple Mayorships. What can I say, I’m a late bloomer.

For those of you scratching your head and wondering what the bejeebers I’m talking about, it is a social media app that allows you to “check-in” when you go somewhere. Once you do, you can see who else has checked-in there or who else might be nearby. Bottom line, who needs big brother to watch our every move? That was so 1984. This is the new millennium and we can report are whereabouts and activities for ourselves thank you very much!

Here’s an example of how this worked for me last week. First, I checked-in at Turtle Bread. This is my usual hangout while the kidlet is practicing his fencing next door. Then I saw a friend was checked-in across the street at a sushi/Thai restaurant. I asked her, via Foursquare, how it was. The restaurant itself is a small and unassuming little hole-in-the-wall. She said it was really good food with great happy hour specials and a patio in the back. A patio? Who knew! Guess where I will be checking-in next week? Yup. The patio of this new restaurant with a plate of sushi. Yummers!

In addition to cool little interactions and discoveries like this, whoever has the most check-ins at a place gets to be the Mayor! Some places even offer free coffee to the current Mayor. I don’t know if I get any fab deals at the VFW, but I’m going to find out soon. Just one more check-in…

Are you a Mayor anywhere?
